Frequently Asked Questions

Why is H2S training so important?

Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is a colorless gas that smells like rotten eggs at low concentrations but becomes odorless at lethal levels because it paralyzes your sense of smell. At concentrations above 100 ppm, it can cause unconsciousness within seconds and death within minutes. H2S is naturally present in many oil and gas reservoirs and can be released during drilling, production, and processing. This training teaches you to detect it, protect yourself, and rescue others.

What do you practice during H2S hands-on training?

You will practice donning a self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) under timed conditions, fitting and testing escape-only respirators, performing rescue drags on a weighted mannequin to simulate extracting an unconscious coworker from an H2S zone, and operating personal H2S gas monitors. These are life-saving skills — pay close attention during practical sessions.

Is H2S Alive the same as H2S Clear?

They cover similar content but are different programs. H2S Alive is developed by Energy Safety Canada (formerly Enform) and is the most widely recognized H2S certification worldwide. H2S Clear is a newer alternative gaining acceptance in the U.S. market. Most operators accept either, but H2S Alive is the safer choice if you are unsure which your employer prefers.
